The French decree, transposing the WEEE European Directive, transfers to the producers the responsibility of WEEE collection and treatment.
The disposal of household waste or similar, dangerous or not, is provided by municipalities, possibly in conjunction with the departments and regions.
However, WEEE collection by civic amenities is on a voluntary basis. Thus, the civic amenity chooses not to sort certain categories of waste and sets itself the level of service offered to its residents (collecting door-to-door, proximity or voluntary contribution).
The additional costs associated with the establishment of selective sorting are borne by the Authorized Coordinator Organism (OCAD3E).
As of 15 September 2007, 140 communities have joined the ERP France network.
The ERP WEEE channel now covers over 12 million people.
